It’s been a very busy week for me. I started a new job and I’m traveling because of training. It turns out that my hotel internet connection isn’t quite good enough to stream HD episodes of Heirs so I haven’t really bothered to keep watching.

What’s the point of watching a fuzzy Lee Minho?

So for now I’ll keep this What I’m Watching Wednesday simple and focus on my thoughts for episodes 9 through 11.

WATCHING: Heirs (Episodes 9-11)

Such drama! Such angst! Heirs has been improving, but there are still many cringe worthy moments.

So Eun Sang admits she actually likes Kim Tan. Huh? That was fast. In a way I’m glad that they go over that hurdle pretty quickly, but at the same time, I’m not really believing the plot line. Kim Tan is obsessing over Eun Sang and then TADA she also happens to like him. Well, I guess if you look at good as Lee Minho, exceptions can be made. His beauty will sneak attack you if you aren’t careful!

The dynamic between Kim Tan and Young Do has kept things a bit interesting. They fight, both physically and psychologically, to try and get what they want (Eun Sang). The various forms of sabotage they do to each other are some of my favorite parts from the recent episodes.

For instance:

Oh, where’s your mom? I need to say hi. Ahhhhhhh, right.

Young Do, that was low. However, that didn’t stop me from laughing through this part.

You are just so great at making awkward tension!

Young Do

Young Do has really grown on me. I think what is keeping me invested in this drama largely has to do with his characterization. It’s fun and refreshing; two adjectives that can rarely be used when describing Heirs.

While he’s a typical “bad boy”, but this persona combined with his quirky attitude and troubled family situation really makes me like him all the more. He’s a bully and he knows it. He’s not afraid to be an ass, but when it comes to Eun Sang he can also draw a line.

While yes, he is also pining after her, his pining is not as desperate or as silly as Kim Tan’s. Just look at that line. How can your heart not melt a little?

But come on, buddy. Maybe making Eun Sang do everyone’s dishes isn’t the best way to get her to love you…

Kim Tan and Eun Sang

I admit, their relationship is slowly growing on me. In line with how this drama is just like every other drama, their relationship has many familiar elements that any seasoned drama watcher will recognize. Our main characters have worked through the “ok, yes, we like each other” stage and are skipping fast toward the “this will never work out, let’s break up” phase.

They’ve certainly had some cute moments. The campfire scene was good, especially since Eun Sang took a more dominant role in the relationship. There was actual reciprocity, making this “I like you” thing more believable.

But Kim Tan, you’ve got to stop popping up places. Warning others every once in a while is a nice thing to do.

Otherwise, you’ll keep seeing things like:

Young Do’s awkward tension has struck again!

This scene was also adorable. I especially loved how the “barricade” completely failed.

Kim Tan, you try so hard. It’s in these moments that I liked you best.

For future reference, less pining and more action is a winning combination.

Watching Kim Tan admit his feelings for Eun Sang to his mom was a tough train wreck to watch. In a way I’m glad that he is trying to move forward his relationship, but now the conflict has come, and perhaps it is too early. I hope this doesn’t mean that we have many more episodes of denial and lost love before we can solve this.

From where I’m at, Heirs still has 9 hours to fill… This makes me nervous for what is to come. I guess there is always amnesia, fatal illness, or more crazy birth secrets if the writers run out of these cheabol love lines!

Other Highlights:

Bo Na’s character has been great fun. I didn’t expect to like her, but she provides great comic relief. I love how she’ll pretty much do anything for Eun Sang in fear that her boyfriend will be stolen away. I wish we saw more of her!

Speaking of characters we don’t see much, what’s up with Hyo Shin? He was quite a minor character until just these past episodes. The whole suicide issue was casually tossed about and he also kissed his tutor on the forehead. I’m expecting some big things in store for this kid, but I’m not so sure they’ll all be positive. I fear for his wellbeing…

The pool scene was hilarious. Of course, Young Do had to drop Eun Sang in the water, and of course Kim Tan had to retaliate by kicking him in as well! Another great example of their ridiculous power play. 

Also, Kim Woo Bin looked mighty fine in this scene. Lee Minho, look out! You have some competition. 

The summer camp atmosphere was an interesting plot device. I didn’t particularly like it, but at least we got to see some of the other numerous characters in action. I guess drawn out, pointless paintball fights just aren’t for me.

The relationship between Eun Sang’s mother and Kim Tan’s real mom is wonderful. Such a fun couple. I think I like it so much because it is actually unique. These aren’t your typical drama characters and that helps them stand out in a sea of predictability.

I’m getting used to Heirs. I think it helps that I am now more familiar with the characters and my expectations have dropped since the beginning.

Since I’m not caught up, I can’t comment on what has been happening in the last 3 episodes. I just hope there is more problem solving, and a lot less staring. I’m sick and tired of long, drawn out pining.
