The additional humor in episode 11 of Doctor Stranger was a very welcome change. To put it shortly, if Hoon’s happy, I’m happy. I’ve decided there’s a direct correlation between the presence of Hoon’s lighthearted persona and my enjoyment of this show. I was glad to see the spy conspiracies take a backseat for once, leaving more room for amusing bickering and some solid Hoon/Doctor Moon bromance. Sure, we aren’t any closer to getting answers to the central questions, but at least we were given plenty of reasons to crack a smile during this hour!
The Morning After
Our team of doctors had quite the rowdy night of drinking and karaoke, causing them to stumble back to Soo Hyun’s place.
Their memories slowly recover, revealing that the night even involved a make out session with a mannequin.
But wait! What happened to Hoon and Soo Hyun? Last they saw, he was carrying her upstairs…
Could it be…?
Hoon certainly looks comfortable.
Don’t worry! Drunk Hoon just wanted to snuggle with his bud Doctor Moon.
These two make an adorable pair!
Needless to say, the team was rather embarrassed over the whole situation.
Please take note of Hoon’s hair. It’s rather epic in this scene.
Soo Hyun and Jae Hee Bought the Same House
Due to a mistake (conspiracy perhaps?), Soo Hyun’s house was actually bought by Seung Hee. Seung Hee offers to let Soo Hyun stay for the time being until she can find another place to live. Looks like these two are going to be roommates.
Jae Hee is Jealous
Jae Hee is not too happy that Hoon helped carry Soo Hyun home the night before. She drags him out of the hospital by his ear, a scene very similar to the one we saw of Hoon and Jae Hee back in North Korea.
Hoon defends that the piggy back was out of necessity, but he promises not to do it again.
Hoon and Soo Hyun Bicker Over Their Hair
In perhaps my favorite scene of the episode, Hoon confronts Soo Hyun about the strand of hair that she left behind.
Their argument quickly turns into a full on head scratching fight.
Yes, it’s strange, but it’s also rather adorable!
Jae Joon Tries Bribe Hoon to Give Up the Prime Minister’s Surgery
Jae Joon offers Hoon a very large sum of money in exchange for the Prime Minister’s operation. He explains to Hoon that he is willing to do a best 2 out of 3 competition and that this deal is in his best interest to accept.
Hoon questions Jae Joon’s motives, asking why he wants to do this surgery so badly. Hoon can understand Jae Joon’s ambition to become the hospital director, but Hoon has his own important (although still mysterious) reasons for needing to win the competition. Hoon ends up rejecting Jae Joon’s offer.
Jae Joon Calls the Police
In response to Hoon’s refusal to cooperate, Jae Joon alerts the police that Hoon illegally viewed Seung Hee’s medical records. Hoon and Doctor Moon are arrested and taken to the police station.
With his past experience, Hoon shares with Moon his three rules to follow for when you are arrested.
1. Run: Didn’t work too well this time.
2. Deny: Also didn’t last too long.
3. Confess: AKA blame the other person.
Hoon comically claims that his “master” made him do it.
Doctor Moon goes crazy and Hoon has a good time rubbing it in his face.
More Soo Hyun and Jae Joon Fighting
These two continue to clash, this time over Soo Hyun’s concern for Hoon.
While Soo Hyun’s father is putting pressure on her to get engaged to Jae Joon, I don’t see how this relationship will be able to actually work.
Hoon and Jae Joon Reach An Agreement
Hoon finally concedes to Jae Joon’s terms and they agree to continue the surgery competition. This time, Hoon will be picking the patients that will operate on.
Jae Hee Still Won’t Reveal Her Grand Plan to Hoon
Hoon finally asks Jae Hee why he needs to perform the Prime Minister’s Surgery. We aren’t any closer to an answer, but I did like that Hoon is starting to question some of this horrible reasoning.
Regardless, he promises to do whatever she tell him. Oh Hoon…
Chang Yi Gets Dolled Up
Chang Yi has a new job, one that requires her to wear makeup and a sexy dress. Hoon quickly complements her before running off, but the more exciting development are the newfound interactions between Chang Yi and the womanizing doctor Chi Gyu.
This guy’s already smitten. I don’t think being hit over the head with water bottles is going to stop his active imagination.
New Medical Emergency
Hoon comes across a woman who is having chest pains and collapses outside of the hospital.
He uses his awesome diagnostic skills to determine she needs surgery ASAP.
Unfortunately, the doctor in charge of her case will not let Hoon intervene. It looks like the problems the woman is having are from a medical error from a previous surgery. The hospital is trying to cover up the mistake and claim that the issue will go away on its own. Hoon is rather upset that he can’t do anything to help.
But Hoon wouldn’t be Hoon if he didn’t defy rules for the sake of saving a life. He decides to assemble his own team and operate on the patient without the consent of the other department.
Hoon never wants to say no to a patient.
Hoon Calls in His Dream Team
Hoon reaches out to the usual suspects: Jae Hee, Nurse Min, and Soo Hyun. They all agree to help out despite the risk.
Seriously, who could refuse this face?
Problems Arise Before the Surgery
Just as the surgery is about to start, the other doctors rush in to stop Hoon.
The head doctor is particularly adamant, first punching Hoon and then even moving to hit Soo Hyun.
Jae Joon breaks up the nonsense and steps up to protect his girlfriend and restore some order.
Hoon Decides on the Second Competition
Hoon declares that the next stage of competition will be to operate on this woman’s heart. The details are still very fuzzy, but I expect the first part of episode 12 will deal with how Jae Joon and Hoon handle this situation.
In Conclusion
I found episode 11 to be much more pleasing than last week’s Doctor Stranger episodes. It may be because I’m a sucker for a smiling Lee Jong Suk, but I definitely walked away from this episode with more faith in the direction of the show. No this show isn’t perfect, but I was glad to know that the writers can remember how to use humor to their advantage.
Speaking of humor, I really enjoy the interactions between Hoon and his “master” Doctor Moon. I’m hopeful that these two will continue on with their amusing friendship.
The love lines still remain unclear. I am going to let the story run it’s course, but I must say I enjoy the playful relationship between Soo Hyun and Hoon. I can’t say if anything will come from it, but for now I will look forward to see how the writers decide to move forward.
What did you think of episode 11? Was it an improvement from last week? What was your favorite scene?
