Episode 13 keeps a largely lighthearted feel, focusing mostly on stopping lawsuits and questioning romantic feelings. Hoon and Jae Joon continue to develop a friendly camaraderie and the surgery competition gets a new twist. Overall, it was an entertaining hour, but I am more than ready for some big answers to the many, many questions that plague this drama. It’s episode 13 and we are still kept almost entirely in the dark to central plot points. Are we there yet?
Hoon Saves the Day
Hoon steps into the operating room at the start of Episode 13 ready to help out Jae Joon’s team. Following a brief pep talk and pause to stare up at the heartless doctors in the observation room, Hoon quickly finds the source of the bleeding and gets the patient under control. Hoon happily points out that the surgery was a success because Jae Joon’s First is so good.
Jae Joon Apologizes to the Patient’s Family
Following the successful surgery, Jae Joon tries to apologize for the hospital’s past mistakes. He believes that apologizing can get the family to drop the lawsuit. Unfortunately, his actions aren’t enough to sway the father.
Hoon Actually Calls Soo Hyun “Dr. Oh”
Soo Hyun is delighted that Hoon finally acknowledged that she is a doctor, not just a Quack.
Hoon of course denies the significance. Their bickering is adorable as usual.
Hoon Gets a New Haircut
While not particularly important to the plot, Hoon finally gets a new hairstyle, leaving the perm far behind.
What is significant is the Soo Hyun was the one to bug him about changing his hair. Coincidence? I think not.
Jae Joon Asks Soo Hyun to Come With Him to America
Now that Jae Joon’s job is on the line, he asks Soo Hyun to come with him to America if he needs to leave the hospital. Soo Hyun quickly pulls away, reassuring him that that won’t happen. Her feelings for Jae Joon continue to waver.
Hoon Fights with Jae Hee
After the surgery, Hoon just wants to be alone. Jae Hee insists on talking with him and he expresses his anger that she wanted him to ignore a dying patient.
Hoon thought everything would be fine now that he has Jae Hee, but he’s confused by her actions.
It’s clear that he feels a disconnect between Jee Hee’s past and present selves.
Jae Hee Stops Agent Cha From Killing Hoon
Agent Cha wants to kill Hoon for helping with the surgery, but Jae Hee grabs his gun and shoots warning shots at his head.
She begs for him to wait just a little longer.
Soo Hyun Asks for Hoon’s Help to Stop the Lawsuit
Soo Hyun was able to get her dad to agree to not punish the doctors that helped with the surgery if they can stop the lawsuit from the family. Soo Hyun immediately turns to Hoon and gets him to help her out.
Unfortunately their apology isn’t the one that the dad is looking for.
Don’t worry, Hoon has his own unique method to find the third year resident that made the mistake.
Hoon calls upon his past mob patients for their help.
Good thing Soo Hyun has plenty of money to pay for their services.
This was a rather fun and amusing scene. It was nice to see the 500 won make another appearance!
Apology Accepted and Lawsuit Avoided
Hoon’s actions help get the doctors to finally admit their wrongs. While the dad wanted to continue with the lawsuit, the son persuaded him to drop the charges. Viola, criss averted.
Hoon See His Mother
While Hoon doesn’t yet realize that the woman with the teddy bear is his mom, he can’t help but feel a strange connection.
It’s only a matter of time before the pieces are fully put together.
The Prime Minster Will Not Use Myung Woo Hospital for His Surgery
And the mysteries continue… The competition is now seemingly void, but we all know this is just part of the Prime Minster’s master plan. I’d really like some answers soon! My guess is that the Prime Minister’s goal is to get the President to choose Myung Woo for his own surgery. That way he can have Hoon kill off the president in the operating room.
Hoon Loses His Place at Myung Woo
Chairman Oh decides that all the doctors can keep their jobs except for Hoon. Hoon is glad to leave, especially now that the competition has reached its end. He says his goodbyes to Doctor Moon and Soo Hyun. Soo Hyun takes it particularly hard, even trying to get Hoon to keep his white coat “just in case”.
Soo Hyun is Haunted By Memories of Hoon
Everywhere Soo Hyun turns in the hospital, she can’t help but think of Hoon. Her emotions eventually build up until tears begin to fall.
She ends up taking comfort in Jae Joon’s arms when she sees him in the hallway.
Jae Joon and Hoon Bonding
Jae Joon unexpectedly shows up at Hoon’s house, hoping to get answers to why Hoon stepped in to help with the surgery and the lawsuit.
Of course, Hoon is rather confused to see him.
It’s nice to see a some camaraderie develop between these two.
Turns out, Hoon isn’t really the best host. Lesson Learned: Don’t ever drink coffee made by Hoon!
Jae Joon instead invites Hoon out for a drink. Two important topics are brought up. 1. Hoon’s family and 2. What does Hoon think of Soo Hyun. Both will have greater implications for the story moving forward.
While Hoon goes to the bathroom, Jae Joon answers Soo Hyun’s phone call to Hoon’s phone. It’s rather obvious that Soo Hyun has feelings for Hoon and this prompts Jae Joon to ask for Hoon’s opinion of Soo Hyun. Hoon admits that he admires that she is becoming a real doctor and that she’s rather cute. However, he denies that he has any feelings for her.
Soo Hyun’s Upset Over Hoon’s Denial of Feelings
Hoon and Jae Joon then go over to Soo Hyun and Jae Hee’s house to eat the curry Soo Hyun prepared for Hoon. Hoon goes on to list off all the reasons the Quack couple would never work out.
Understandably, Soo Hyun is not pleased by his words. She storms off and Jae Joon even goes to ask if she likes Hoon.
She’s rather horrible at hiding her feelings.
Jae Joon Finds Out Who Hoon’s Father Is
Jae Joon now knows that the doctor Park Chul, who had promised to help in his father’s lawsuit, is none other than Hoon’s father. What Jae Joon still doesn’t quite know is that Park Chul disappeared not by choice, but because he was sent to North Korea. I’m sure Jae Joon will unravel this mystery very quickly.
Hoon Calls His Mom’s Old Phone Number
At the end of episode 13, Hoon goes back to his old house, which for some strange reason has remained untouched and unlocked all this time. (Yeah right…) Regardless, he finds his old notebook that has his mom’s phone number in it. He immediately gives it a try and to his surprise a woman answers, asking “Is this Hoon?”. Dun dun dun.
In Conclusion
I can’t quite decide if I liked this episode. Answers continue to be elusive, but I was kept rather entertained by the Quack Couple bickering and the developing Hoon/Jae Joon friendship. There are many instances where I need to suspend reality, but once I remind myself that this is just a drama, I can allow myself to enjoy the show much more. Lee Jong Suk continues to go a good job in his role and I really look forward to seeing where these twisting plots finally end up.
Soo Hyun’s feelings for Hoon are becoming more and more obvious. As much as I’d love for this couple to occur, I really don’t want the writers to force Hoon into developing nonsensical feelings that he doesn’t actually have. I’m just going to sit back and see how this all plays out.
What did you think about episode 13? What mystery do you most want answered? What do you think will happen next?
